Overview: Doctoral Authority in Holistic Health
The IBC-HHD™ — ICONIC Board Certified Holistic Health Doctorate — is the fourth tier in the ICONIC Board's seven-tier credentialing pathway. It is a senior, application-based credential that recognizes practitioners who combine doctoral-level academic qualifications with demonstrated leadership in the holistic health field.
The IBC-HHD™ occupies a critical position in the pathway: it is the highest tier attainable purely through application and review, without examination. It validates that you have not only built deep expertise in holistic health but have also shaped the field through leadership — whether through research, program development, organizational leadership, or published contributions.
The IBC-HHD™ is for those who have advanced beyond personal practice and education into the role of field architect — practitioners who help define, build, and advance the holistic health profession itself.
Who the IBC-HHD™ Is For
This credential is designed for senior holistic health professionals who hold doctoral-level qualifications and have demonstrably contributed to advancing the field. Typical candidates include:
- Naturopathic doctors, doctors of integrative medicine, or related doctoral degree holders who practice in holistic health
- Directors and founders of holistic health programs or schools
- Researchers who have published peer-reviewed work in holistic or integrative health
- Professional association leaders who help set standards for the field
- Experienced holistic health educators who have shaped curriculum at the institutional level
The IBC-HHD™ is not simply a continuation of the educator path — it requires an additional layer: doctoral academic standing combined with leadership that goes beyond individual practice or teaching into field-level impact.
Requirements for the IBC-HHD™
The IBC-HHD™ requires three categories of qualification:
- Active IBC-HHE™: Your Tier III credential must be current. This ensures that the applicant has already established their credentials as an active practitioner and educator before reaching the doctoral tier.
- Doctoral-level qualification: An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in a relevant field — this may include ND (Naturopathic Doctor), PhD in health sciences, health education, integrative medicine, or related disciplines, or a recognized equivalent professional doctoral credential. The board evaluates each qualification individually. Applicants holding honorary doctorates should note that the board distinguishes between honorary and earned doctoral qualifications for this requirement.
- Demonstrated field leadership: Verifiable evidence that you have contributed to the holistic health field beyond your individual practice. Accepted forms of evidence include: peer-reviewed or professionally published research or writing in the field, documented leadership of a holistic health organization, program, or institution, development of recognized training standards or curriculum at an institutional or industry level, testimony to professional bodies, government agencies, or standards committees on holistic health matters, or other documented contributions that have shaped the field.
On doctoral qualification: The ICONIC Board recognizes that doctoral-level holistic health qualifications come in many forms. If you hold a doctoral credential from a recognized institution and believe it meets the spirit of this requirement, include a full description in your application. The board reviews each case on its merits.
How the IBC-HHD™ Differs from the IBC-DHH™
This is one of the most common questions at this level of the pathway. Both are senior credentials, but they are fundamentally different in how they are earned:
| Dimension | IBC-HHD™ (Tier IV) | IBC-DHH™ (Tier V) |
|---|---|---|
| How Awarded | Application and review | Board examination |
| What It Measures | Qualifications and field contributions | Board-level knowledge and competency |
| Doctoral Requirement | Yes — prerequisite | Requires prior IBC-HHD™ |
| Examination | No written or applied exam | Comprehensive written and applied exam |
| Application Fee | $495 | $795 |
In practice: you earn the IBC-HHD™ by demonstrating your qualifications and contributions. You earn the IBC-DHH™ by sitting and passing the board's comprehensive examination. Holding the IBC-HHD™ is the prerequisite for sitting the IBC-DHH™ examination.
Cost and Renewal
