Step 1: Check the Parent Domain

ICONIC Board's modality framework uses six broad domains. Many practices that aren't named explicitly fall within the scope of an existing domain. For example, "Watsu" (water shiatsu) would credential under Somatic & Bodywork Therapies; "Tapping / EFT" would credential under Mind-Body & Contemplative Practices. Before assuming your modality isn't covered, review all six domains and consider which fits your practice best.

Step 2: Submit a Modality Inquiry

If you've reviewed the domain list and genuinely don't see a fit, use the inquiry form in your application to describe your modality. Include:

The credentialing review team assesses unlisted modalities against ICONIC Board's framework criteria and will respond with one of three outcomes: a domain fit recommendation, a hold pending framework expansion, or a scope-out determination.

What Makes a Modality Eligible?

ICONIC Board evaluates modalities against three criteria:

Practices that are licensed professions in most jurisdictions (e.g., acupuncture, naturopathic medicine, chiropractic) are out of scope for ICONIC Board credentialing — those professions have their own regulatory bodies.

Your inquiry has direct impact. The framework expansion process is driven largely by practitioner inquiries. If multiple practitioners inquire about the same unlisted modality, it moves to the top of the review queue. See How are new modalities added to the framework? for the full process.

While You Wait for a Decision

If your modality is under review, you may still be able to apply under the closest parent domain. Your application notes can specify that your primary practice is a sub-modality or variant of that domain. The credential issued will reflect your domain, and the specific practice name can appear in your directory profile narrative.
